Vandalia Health Opens $26M Mon Harrison Neighborhood Hospital in Bridgeport

Vandalia Health officially celebrated the grand opening of the new $26 million Mon Harrison Neighborhood Hospital in Bridgeport, marking a major expansion of healthcare infrastructure in north-central West Virginia. Located at Charles Pointe Crossing, the facility is scheduled to officially open its doors and begin seeing patients on September 29, bringing round-the-clock emergency care and short-stay inpatient services directly to the local community.

The milestone comes after more than four years of planning, partnership, and construction. Mon Health System began the formal process of bringing a neighborhood hospital to Bridgeport in July 2022 with the filing of a Certificate of Need. The two-story, approximately 38,000-square-foot facility is designed to provide residents with advanced medical services close to home, cutting down travel times for urgent care needs.

“Mon Harrison represents an important new chapter for Vandalia Health in Harrison County and another significant investment in the healthcare infrastructure of north-central West Virginia,” said Krystal Atkinson, Chief Administrative Officer of Vandalia Health Mon Medical Center and Senior Vice President of Vandalia Health, as reported by the Dominion Post. Atkinson added that the health system is proud to build upon existing local care by bringing 24/7 emergency services and advanced diagnostics directly to Bridgeport.

Facility Capabilities and Design

The newly unveiled facility is equipped to handle a wide variety of urgent and routine medical needs. The ground floor houses a full-service emergency department operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, complete with eight treatment rooms and staffed by board-certified physicians. In addition to emergency care, the facility features 10 private inpatient rooms dedicated to short-stay hospital care.

Patients will also have access to robust on-site diagnostic capabilities, including CT scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, X-rays, and comprehensive laboratory services. Meanwhile, the building’s second floor has been intentionally left open for future clinical expansion, ensuring the facility can adapt as regional healthcare demands evolve.

General contractor March-Westin spearheaded the construction efforts, working alongside health-focused architectural firm PhiloWilkie and Vandalia Health project teams to bring the concept to reality.

Modeled After Proven Success

The Bridgeport hospital is modeled directly after the Vandalia Health Mon Marion Neighborhood Hospital in White Hall, which first opened its doors in 2021. Administrators utilized operational insights, patient flow strategies, and clinical delivery methods refined at the White Hall location to shape the design and function of the new Harrison County site.

The neighborhood hospital model aims to provide quality hospital care in a smaller, accessible setting. The White Hall facility previously earned national recognition for its efficiency, including a designation by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of 12 hospitals in the country.

Community Collaboration and Support

During the grand opening celebration, health system leaders expressed deep gratitude to local stakeholders, elected officials, and community partners who championed the project. Special acknowledgment was given to Jamie and Jennifer Corton alongside Genesis Partners for donating the land at Charles Pointe Crossing that serves as the hospital’s home.

Additional recognition was extended to the City of Bridgeport, the Harrison County Commission, and Tax Increment Financing district stakeholders for their cooperative efforts in advancing the development.

“Mon Harrison not only represents an investment in a building and healthcare, but an investment in the long-term strength and vitality of Harrison County,” said Ron Stovash, Chairman of the Vandalia Health Board of Directors, according to the Dominion Post. Stovash noted that the opening marks a proud day for the region and establishes a new chapter of accessible care.

As September 29 approaches, hospital staff are completing final preparations to welcome their first patients.
