Threads reaches 500 million users as Connor Hayes takes leadership

Meta’s text-based social network Threads has reached 500 million users three years after its 2023 launch, prompting a leadership transition as Instagram head Adam Mosseri hands control of the platform to longtime product executive Connor Hayes, who is now steering its growth alongside Meta’s AI agent push.

The journey from a bare-bones team project to a half-billion-user network has altered Meta’s internal dynamics. When Threads debuted in July 2023, the platform actively courted displaced Twitter users struggling with the platform under Elon Musk's ownership. Yet market realities shifted the underlying strategy.

Expanding the Social Graph Beyond Competitor Migration

Initial projections assumed that scaling Threads required capturing active users from competing services like Twitter, which Musk claimed brought in 600 million users following its rebrand. Instead, the growth trajectory charted a different course.

According to Hayes, the platform expanded the overall market rather than merely cannibalizing competitors. A substantial segment of daily Facebook and Instagram users adopted the text-based app despite having never used alternatives like Twitter.

What began as an explicit search for a safer, more positive conversational alternative has evolved into community-centric niches. Meta is actively attempting to structure Threads as a hybrid ecosystem combining the real-time elements of Twitter, direct messaging formats, and the deep category-specific passion found on Reddit.

Cross-App Promotions Paving the Way for AI Agents

A primary driver behind Threads’ rapid ascent involves aggressive cross-promotion across Meta’s established applications. By using linked accounts on Facebook and Instagram, Meta recommends relevant Threads content directly into user feeds during active scrolling sessions.

Meta is now applying this exact promotional playbook to Muse, its newly introduced AI agent. However, promoting a conversational AI requires a distinct architectural and marketing approach compared to a user-generated content platform.

Unlike Threads, which relies on an organic engine of user-generated posts to populate recommendation units, Muse lacks an underlying corpus of peer content to naturally drive discovery. Meta is addressing this by building targeted promotional units focused on specific productivity use cases—such as matching soccer fans with relevant Muse capabilities—rather than leaning on native social posts.

The engagement funnel requires a different hook. While a user returns to Threads because compelling content caught their interest, the hook for an AI agent like Muse sits further down the funnel, relying on utility rather than ambient social discovery.

Moderation Stances on AI Generated Content

As social networks grapple with synthetic media, platform policies diverge significantly. While publishing platforms like Substack actively police against AI-generated material to avoid becoming overrun by automated text, Meta is taking a more permissive approach on Threads.

Meta applies its standard detection and labeling framework to identify AI-generated content across its applications. At the same time, the company acknowledges that many users want to use AI tools to enhance their content and platform presence.

The platform’s leadership maintains that human-generated content remains the primary driver of authentic engagement. Active policing against synthetic text is not the current objective, as market preference is expected to favor human-driven conversations naturally.
