Sony Unveils First FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye Zoom G Lens for Alpha Cameras

Sony has announced the SEL814G (FE 8-14mm F3.5 Fisheye G), its first fisheye zoom G Lens designed for full-frame Alpha E-mount cameras. Priced at an MSRP of $1,599.99 USD ($1,999.99 CAD) and scheduled for an October 2026 release, the 314-gram optic covers both circular and diagonal fisheye perspectives through an 8mm to 14mm focal range.

For cinematographers and hybrid shooters operating within Sony’s ecosystem, optical design choices dictate physical realities. Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics, highlighted the engineering target in a media release. “Our first fisheye zoom runs circular through diagonal across 8 to 14 millimeters, so you can find your perspective standing right in front of the subject. We held it to G Lens resolution through the whole range, to provide an exciting, high-quality creative tool. And at 314 grams, you can carry it all day,” Cheng stated.

Optical Architecture and Focal Coverage Mechanics

The engineering behind a dual-behavior fisheye optic requires strict control over chromatic aberration. At the 8mm end of the zoom spectrum, the lens projects a 180-degree circular image onto a full-frame sensor. At 14mm, the image circle expands to fill the entire frame diagonally with a 180-degree diagonal angle of view while maintaining a constant aperture of f/3.5.

To suppress chromatic and other aberrations across this wide field of view, Sony integrated Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass alongside aspherical elements. The mechanical assembly utilizes an inner zoom mechanism. This specific design choice minimizes shifts in the center of gravity while zooming, which is a critical specification for operators balancing rigs on gimbals or rigs.

Close-up performance is equally demanding for ultra-wide glass. The SEL814G achieves a minimum focusing distance of 0.15 meters paired with a maximum magnification of 0.22x at the telephoto end. Autofocus duties are handled by fast, precise tracking while suppressing focus breathing, a feature for movie production.

Spatial Computing and Dual-Camera Rigging

Beyond traditional landscape, architecture, and sports photography, the hardware targets the spatial content and Virtual Reality production markets. According to Sony Electronics specifications, configuring two sets of the VENICE Extension System Mini side by side with the SEL814G places the optical axes approximately 64 millimeters apart.

That 64mm metric is close to the average human interpupillary distance. By mimicking human binocular geometry, the dual-lens setup captures spatial content with a natural sense of depth and distance. It shifts the hardware from a specialty creative lens into a production asset for immersive media.

Physical Specifications and Ruggedized Ergonomics

Field durability separates consumer glass from production tools. The SEL814G measures approximately 63.1 millimeters in maximum diameter by 82.8 millimeters in length, tipping the scales at 314 grams. The exterior incorporates a dust- and moisture-resistant design paired with a fluorine coating on the front element to support use in outdoor environments.
