Richard Gere celebrated his 77th birthday alongside his 43-year-old wife, Alejandra Silva, and their six-year-old son, James, marking the occasion with family photos shared publicly on Tuesday. Silva posted an image on Instagram capturing the couple in a hug alongside their son joining in, accompanied by the caption, “No one I rather spend my life with, happy birthday, I love you, we love you.” A subsequent photograph featured Silva seated on a bench alongside the family pets.
Family Life and the Move to Spain
The birthday milestone comes as the couple manages bi-continental living arrangements following their relocation to Spain in 2024. Gere and Silva reconnected romantically in 2014 after meeting years earlier through family friends, eventually marrying in 2018. They share two sons together, Alexander and James.
The family moved to Spain to allow Silva to return to her roots and be closer to her relatives. Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2025, Silva outlined their ongoing schedule balancing two countries. “For a few years we’ll live in Spain, and then come back. But we’re always coming back,” she said regarding her sons. “We’ll come back here in the summer because we have the kids at camp. We just have to balance our lives there and here.”
Silva noted the duality of maintaining ties to both nations. “I’m with my family… I missed them a lot. But I miss the U.S. So we come back and forth,” she told the outlet.
Transitioning to Madrid
Before the move, Gere discussed the decision to relocate with Vanity Fair Spain in 2024, noting it would be his first time living full-time outside the United States. “For me, going to Madrid is going to be a great adventure because I have never lived full time outside the United States,” the actor said. “And I think it will also be very interesting for my children. For Alejandra, it will be wonderful to be closer to her family, her lifelong friends and her culture.”
Gere added that the relocation felt equitable after years spent in his home environment. “She was very generous in giving me six years living in my world, so I think it’s fair that I give her at least six others living in hers,” he stated. “In any case, I love Spain and I think your lifestyle is fabulous.”
Having lived in New York City since his early twenties, Gere acknowledged the deep ties he maintained with the city. In a November 2024 interview with Fox News Digital, he reflected on leaving Manhattan. “New York gets in your blood. It’s very hard to remove that. It infects your DNA,” Gere said. “But I love Spain too. I love Madrid. And it’s time for my wife to be around her family and friends and culture. And good for our kids. I think it’s great to be living — not just visiting — but living in another culture.”
