A Historic Climb Through the Monza Grid
Antonelli’s victory at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza ended a 60-year drought for Italian drivers at the home circuit, echoing Ludovico Scarfiotti’s historic 1966 win with Ferrari. The young Mercedes driver carved through the field immediately after the lights went out, overtaking seven rivals in the opening two laps alone.
The race dynamic shifted drastically on the opening laps when Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc lost control of his car at speeds exceeding 230 kilometers per hour, triggering a heavy accident and a race suspension. Following the red flag and subsequent restart, Antonelli found himself lining up from the 12th position.

Quickly working his way into the points-paying positions, Antonelli engaged in sustained battles near the front. Team radio instructions from Mercedes principal Toto Wolff and the pit wall emphasized clean racing between the Silver Arrows as Antonelli dueled with teammate George Russell. Russell ultimately crossed the finish line in second place, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen rounded out the podium in third.
“This is the dream that I had since I was a child. After the second restart I knew I could fight for that victory and I went for it,” Antonelli stated after climbing out of his cockpit.
The win establishes Antonelli as the youngest race winner in Monza’s history while cementing his trajectory in the 2026 World Drivers’ Championship.
Struggles for Spanish Contenders at Monza
While the Italian crowd celebrated Antonelli’s historic performance, the race proved difficult for Spain’s representatives. Both Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz finished outside the points.
Fernando Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, retired from the race after managing only 25 laps. Alonso had started from the pit lane following the discovery of anomalous data within the components of his Honda power unit. The retirement marked a sharp pivot from his strong points-finishing performance at the previous round.
“Maybe the next one (Madrid) can be one of our opportunities, so looking forward to it,” Alonso remarked following his retirement, signaling an early shift in focus toward the 2027 season.
Carlos Sainz experienced a similarly challenging afternoon in his Williams chassis. Starting from 13th on the grid, Sainz failed to break into the points despite late-race penalties and Leclerc’s high-profile retirement. The Williams package continued to struggle with race pace, with tires suffering under the car’s overall weight.
