Sleep disturbances and long sleep duration are associated with a measurable reduction in working life expectancy among adults aged 50 to 68 years, according to a study published online Aug. 18 in Occupational & Environmental Medicine. The research highlights that chronic sleep issues rival behavioral and occupational risk factors in shortening productive working years.
Researchers led by Saana Myllyntausta, Ph.D., from the University of Turku in Finland, investigated how sleep patterns affect working life expectancy (WLE) between the ages of 50 and 68. The study analyzed data from two major cohorts: the Finnish Public Sector study, which included 70,339 participants, and the Health and Social Support (HeSSup) study, comprising 6,071 participants. Participants self-reported their usual sleep duration and the presence of sleep disturbances.
The statistical models revealed clear gradients in career longevity based on sleep quality. In the larger cohort, individuals reporting no sleep disturbances at age 50 predicted a WLE of 13.4 years. Those reporting moderate disturbances faced a predicted WLE of 13.0 years, while individuals with severe sleep disturbances dropped to 12.8 years.
Sleep duration showed an equally striking divergence. Short sleep duration (defined as less than seven hours) and midrange duration (seven to 8.5 hours) predicted a WLE of 13.2 years. In contrast, long sleep duration (nine hours or longer) dropped the predicted WLE to 12.4 years. Findings concerning sleep duration proved even more pronounced in the HeSSup cohort.
To contextualize these figures, the study authors drew direct parallels between sleep pathology and traditional health hazards. According to the research team, “The reductions in WLE associated with sleep disturbances and long sleep duration are similar in size as having between one or two chronic diseases or two or more behavioral risk factors (e.g., obesity, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical inactivity), as well as with those associated with occupational factors, such as high psychosocial risk at work (e.g., high job strain) and being exposed to high physical workload.”
This framing shifts sleep health from a purely personal wellness category into the realm of occupational medicine and public health policy. Public health agencies across European and North American jurisdictions increasingly recognize that systemic workplace strain and circadian disruption compound one another, accelerating early retirement or disability exits from the workforce.
