FC Bayern Munich Search for Stability: The Hunt for a New Coach Begins

FC Bayern Munich has worn out a number of coaches in the recent past. Current coach Thomas Tuchel is already sitting on his suitcases packed and the separation at the end of the season has been decided. However, the 50-year-old said in an interview with ZDF after the 2-1 win against RB Leipzig: “I still think that I’m not the problem, but I’m the one responsible.”

The terms of office of Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann also ended prematurely in summer 2021 and spring 2023. When asked about the recent coaching wear and tear, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen explained: “It’s at least something we can do better. We want more continuity in the coaching chair again. That’s what we’re striving for.”

President Herbert Hainer is also critical of the recent changes in the coaching bench: “We have now replaced three coaches within a short period of time,” said the 69-year-old. That doesn’t necessarily speak for FC Bayern and isn’t what they want. The goal is “to work with the coach in the long term. We will think about it and analyze it very carefully – and hopefully get the right one,” said Hainer.

Take your time to find a trainer

That’s why the people of Munich don’t want to be pushed when it comes to looking for a new football teacher for the coming season. “Now we have a little time to take a look around, and that’s what we’ll do,” said the chairman of the supervisory board on Saturday evening after the German record champions’ 2-1 win against RB Leipzig.

There is a lot of speculation about possible successors to Tuchel. Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso is considered a preferred candidate. But the name of the former world star and Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was also mentioned. Or that of Sebastian Hoeneß. The nephew of Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß has already successfully coached the Bayern amateurs and is currently working just as successfully as head coach at VfB Stuttgart.

Max Eberl, who is expected to be appointed as the new sports director by the supervisory board at the beginning of the week, will help. “I have already said that more competence and more quality in management can only do us good,” said CEO Dreesen.

Hainer believes upheaval in the team is possible

They now want to find the new coach in peace, “and when we have found him, we will announce it,” said Hainer. The 69-year-old also emphasized that the team was “not uncoachable”.

However, the current season could also cause a change in the star ensemble. “We have to sit down at the end of the season and analyze. What’s going on, why are we not playing so well, is it just the coach or do we have to change something in the team too,” the former Adidas boss asked important questions for the season analysis on. Hainer also announced that they wanted to look back critically. “We all have to question ourselves: the team, the coach, us in leadership – and that’s what we’re doing.”
