Alpine Glaciers Retreat Under Severe Summer Melt
On the ground in Europe, the consequences of sustained record temperatures are visible in real time. In Italy, glaciologists report that intense summer heat is accelerating the retreat of Alpine glaciers at a significant pace.
One Lombardy glacier alone has lost 31 metres this year. The pace of the melt has proven so disruptive that monitoring work has been delayed in some areas because the traditional melt season has not yet drawn to a close.
Atmosphere and Oceans Drive Amplified Extremes
The current climate trajectory stems from a compounding mix of long-term warming trends and active natural cycles. Copernicus researchers point to a powerful combination of record air temperatures, unprecedented ocean heat, and Europe’s exceptional summer as evidence that climate change is actively driving extremes across both the atmosphere and the oceans.
Superimposed on fossil fuel emissions is a strengthening El Niño, a natural climate pattern where a band of the eastern Pacific turns unusually warm. This phenomenon releases massive amounts of stored ocean heat into the atmosphere, pushing global temperatures upward for roughly a year.

The immediate outlook suggests the current run of temperature records may continue to climb. Researchers emphasize that the El Niño event currently underway is still strengthening and could become one of the most powerful on record.
