AI, Drones and Robots Transform Agriculture in Heilongjiang

As of September 2026, Heilongjiang province—China’s top grain producer—is rapidly modernizing its agricultural sector through artificial intelligence, remote-sensing satellites, and autonomous machinery. Managing millions of hectares of arable land from Harbin’s Beidahuang Information Company, authorities are leveraging real-time Internet of Things (IoT) data and regional crop models to transition a 99.28 percent mechanized system into a deeply digitized paradigm.

Data-Driven Farming Across Vast Northern Acres

The sheer scale of Heilongjiang’s agricultural output sets the baseline for national food security. Producing a record 82 million tonnes of grain across its 22nd record harvest in 2025, the province relies on heavy technological deployment to maintain its yield. According to Wang Hao, deputy general manager of the market operation center at Beidahuang Information Company, manual field inspection limits a farmer to roughly 200 mu (about 13 hectares) per day. By contrast, drone fleets and satellite remote sensing cover massive expanses, refreshing crop status data across monitored fields every five days.

Under the hood, this infrastructure runs on cold-region cultivation AI models. These systems ingest granular local soil telemetry, meteorological data, and real-time crop growth metrics to generate variable-rate fertilizer prescriptions. Wang notes that deploying AI at this magnitude remains complex because regional soil compositions and local microclimates vary sharply over short distances, demanding extensive iterative testing and high-density localized training datasets.

Downstream supply chains are experiencing a similar technological overhaul. At Qiaofu Dayuan Agricultural Co., Ltd. in Wuchang, automated robotics stack packaged rice for distribution while embedding QR codes that trace specific nutritional values and exact geographic origins.

Autonomous Field Machinery and Chemical-Free Weed Control

Beyond remote monitoring, localized hardware is transforming field operations. On plots across the province, four-wheeled laser-weeding robots navigate crop rows autonomously. Equipped with multispectral cameras and sensors, these machines differentiate cash crops from invasive weeds in real time, neutralizing the target vegetation with precise laser beams.

Li Yongwei, deputy general manager of Harbin Huagong Zhiyun Technology Co., Ltd., explains that the laser system eliminates more than 95 percent of weeds while harming fewer than 0.1 percent of target crops, slashing manual weeding labor costs by up to 70 percent compared to conventional hand-weeding methods.

Seed drills are seeing parallel upgrades. Electric precision seeders manufactured by Heilongjiang Dewo Technology Development Co., Ltd. connect directly to intelligent onboard terminals. Chief engineer Du Mujun points out that operators can dynamically adjust pneumatic pressure and seed spacing on the fly, reducing seed damage while operating roughly 50 percent faster than legacy mechanical seeders.

The 15th Five-Year Plan and the Shift Toward Intelligent Decision Systems

Equipped with numerous intelligent agricultural machines as of 2025, Heilongjiang is aggressively expanding its hardware footprint. Under the 15th Five-Year Plan spanning 2026 to 2030, provincial authorities are scaling dedicated manufacturing sectors for agricultural robotics and smart implements. Construction on a national pilot facility for agricultural AI crop applications began in August to resolve persistent technical bottlenecks in large-scale deployment.

China Agricultural University Professor Hu Jinyou emphasizes that while smart farming will continue to evolve in complexity, the integration of deep AI frameworks into daily farming operations has become an irreversible industry trend. As a younger, digitally fluent demographic enters the agricultural workforce, automated farm management is rapidly becoming standard operating procedure across China’s primary grain basket.
