Naultinus elegans is a species of nocturnal gecko which has a slender appearance, with a relatively thin body and slender limbs.
As in other species, there appear to be several phases.
For the natural phase, the colors range from green on the top to light green (apple green) on the sides. The underside of the body is white-beige. The back (In anatomy, in vertebrate animals including humans, the back is the part…) is dotted with rather slender white spots, aligned in two lines on each side of the vertebral column (The vertebral column, or spine , is a stack of articulated bones called…) and even on the tail. However, some individuals only have spots, only dots or even a solid color.
There is also an orange phase, with similar patterns, and others, as individuals show great variability in this regard.
The inside of the mouth is bluish.
Geographical distribution
This species is found in New Zealand (New Zealand is a country in Oceania, in the southwest of the Pacific Ocean,…). It lives in trees and shrubs.
Subspecies
Naultinus elegans elegans, Gray, 1842 Naultinus elegans punctatus, Gray, 1843
The subspecies (In biology, a subspecies is an intermediate level, immediately…) Naultinus elegans pentagonalis is notably larger and more robust than the others (it reaches 20 cm), but presents a lower variety of colors .
The subspecies Naultinus elegans punctatus is found in the south (South is a cardinal point, opposite the north.) of the island (An island is an expanse of land surrounded by water, whether this water is that of a watercourse, a…) of the north of New Zealand. It has yellow undersides of its legs (There are (at least) five definitions of yellow which designate approximately the same…), instead of the grey-beige of the other subspecies.
Other subspecies have been referenced but no longer appear in recent classifications: Naultinus elegans pentagonalis and Naultinus elegans sulphureus.
Food
This gecko hunts insects (Insectes is a French-speaking ecology and entomology journal intended for a wide…) in shrubs, such as flies, moths and other arthropods.
