Snow capped San Gabriel Mountains beyond LA’s ‘Hollywood Sign’

(Los Angeles = Yonhap News) Correspondent Jung Yoon-seop = After a snowstorm warning was issued in Los Angeles (LA) County in 34 years, heavy snow fell in the nearby mountains.

According to CNN on the 26th (local time), more than 2m of snow accumulated in some areas, such as Mountain High in the San Gabriel Mountains in LA County.

The iconic ‘Hollywood Sign’ and the San Gabriel Mountains, visible beyond the palm trees in the city, have turned into gigantic snow mountains.

Earlier, the US National Weather Service issued a ‘blizzard’ warning for a winter storm in LA County on the 24th.

It was the first time since 1989 that a blizzard warning was issued for LA, which has mild winter weather.

Since then, a lot of snow has fallen in the San Gabriel Mountains until this day, with some areas recording more than 6.5 feet (regarding 2 meters) of snow.

Linda Sandoval, a resident of Fraser Park, a town regarding 100 kilometers northwest of Los Angeles, said it took more than four hours to get the truck out of the garage because of the snow.

Heavy rain poured down in the lowlands of Southern California, including downtown Los Angeles.

The clouds brought by the winter storm poured more than 120 mm of rain in a valley in San Bernardino County adjacent to Los Angeles County.

Mountain Road 33, which crosses the Los Padres National Forest, has been closed due to landslide hazards.

In Northern California, severe weather following a winter storm caused extensive power outages.

Power was cut to more than 63,000 homes and businesses in the northeast region of California’s capital, Sacramento, and counties near the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Winter storms are expected to affect California this week as well.

The Korea Meteorological Administration has urged people to refrain from traveling by car, saying that more than 30 cm of snow will fall in mountainous areas, including inland in northern California.
