(Seoul = Yonhap News) Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has resigned following fleeing the country amid national bankruptcy.
It’s only five days to escape.
Sri Lanka’s parliamentary speaker’s office said on the 14th (local time) that President Gotabaya sent a letter of resignation to Sri Lanka’s parliament speaker Jaffa Abeiwardena via email shortly following his arrival in Singapore.
President Gotabaya, who fled to Singapore via the Maldives, was once rumored to have asylum in Singapore, but Singapore’s foreign ministry said, “I did not apply for asylum and I was not granted asylum.”
Prior to the flight, Gotabaya appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, whom he had appointed, to the presidency.
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe announced his intention to resign on the 9th, but he exercised his presidential powers to declare a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in the Colombo area.
In a statement, the military and police warned that they would use force if necessary to protect people’s lives and property.
According to CNN, the next presidential election scheduled for the 20th is on hold.
As the government’s tough response is foretold, there are also voices of concern that anti-government protesters and the military and police might clash once more.
Let’s see the video.
