At least 12 people have been killed and 49 hospitalized in a missile strike in Zaporiza, a city in southeastern Ukraine, the region’s governor said.

The attack was carried out following the bridge connecting Crimea and Russia was destroyed, and there are speculations that it was Russian retaliation, but Ukraine said it would hold it accountable.

Rescue workers search for survivors as they scour the rubble of a shattered apartment building.

Several buildings were destroyed by Russian bombardment overnight.

“Some of the nine-story buildings were destroyed overnight and five other houses collapsed,” said Oleksandr Staruk, governor of Zaporiza.

At least 12 people were killed and dozens were injured.

Other Ukrainian officials said 17 people were killed.

The attack came following the bridge linking Crimea and Russia exploded on the 8th.

It is believed to be a Russian retaliatory attack.

After the sinking of the Moscow ship in April, Russia retaliated by bombarding Kiiu and other parts of Ukraine for several days.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has vowed to hold those who ordered and fired the ruthless attack to account.

There is concern that the conflict between the two sides will intensify as Russia’s retaliation is expected, which has been severely hit by the explosion of the bridge in Crimea.
