The European Union (EU) has announced that it has reached an agreement on an embargo on Russian coal and a ban on Russian ships from entering ports in the region.

This is the first EU sanctions once morest Russian energy.

The EU and EU member states, which have been discussing additional sanctions once morest Russia, have agreed not to import Russian coal following dozens of civilian bodies were found in a truck near Kiiu, Ukraine.

It also decided to ban Russian ships from entering the port.

EU member states import 45% of their coal from Russia.

This is 4 billion euros per year, equivalent to 5.3 trillion won in Korean money.

The embargo is expected to take effect in early August, 120 days following publication in the EU Official Gazette on the 8th, AFP news agency reported.

There is a 120-day grace period for Member States to find alternative sources of supply.

The EU has also banned imports of key raw materials and equipment from Russia to prevent Russia from refining its fuel economy.

This is 5.5 billion euros per year, equivalent to regarding 7.3 trillion won in Korean money.

In addition, the names of more than 200 individuals, including Russian oligarchy, the two daughters of a rising conglomerate and President Vladimir Putin, were also placed on the EU sanctions list, AFP news agency reported.

The G7, the seven major countries, also announced additional sanctions once morest Russia, saying that Russian coal will eventually be phased out and banned, and efforts to reduce dependence on Russian oil will be accelerated.
