Ethics Committee Chairman Lee Yang-hee met with reporters immediately following the meeting and said, “In relation to the Itaewon disaster on October 29, 2022, we will deliberate on whether or not the obligation to maintain dignity in Article 4, Article 1 of the Rules of Ethics was violated by causing social controversy with inappropriate words and actions.” The disciplinary process was initiated at the request of more than one-third of the incumbent members in accordance with paragraph 1 of the Initiation of Disciplinary Procedures and Persons with Disciplinary Disposition Authority.”

Previously, Mayor Park, who said in the Itaewon disaster recovery phase that “the ward office did its best”, said regarding the situation at the time of the disaster, “If it’s a festival, there is the content of the event or the organizers, but it’s a phenomenon that gathers on Halloween day.” Controversy arose.

District Mayor Park, who appeared before the National Assembly’s Public Administration and Security Committee on the 7th and was criticized by the opposition lawmakers, drew a line in his resignation by replying, “I am responsible for the great sacrifice.” As a result, a disciplinary action by the Ethics Committee was discussed to restrict party affiliation to Mayor Park, who is an elected official.
