Zwettler Hallenmasters Tournament Cancelled: Impact on Club Teams and Local Community

For several years now, the Zwettler Hallenmasters in the town hall has become a popular tournament for club teams and has quickly developed (initially between Christmas and New Year, then on January 6th) into a classic with the top teams in the Waldviertel. At least this year the tournament will not take place – SC Zwettl has canceled the tournament. The reason for this is the canteen in the Zwettler town hall.

The Union Volleyball Waldviertel has been leasing this since the beginning of this year – and is no longer allowed to pass it on to third parties. “This is stipulated in the lease agreement with the municipality of Zwettl, we cannot move there, otherwise it would be a breach of contract,” explains URW chairman Werner Hahn.

“A lot of expenses, but no income”

Specifically, this means: SC Zwettl, as the organizer of the tournament, was not allowed to operate the canteen and would therefore have had no income from the catering business. According to the new lease agreement, it is no longer possible to take over the canteen at short notice as before. “The contract is like this, we have to accept it,” says chairman Martin Grünstäudl. “But that would have meant that we would have a lot of expenses, such as hall rent or referee fees, but no income. We can’t and don’t want to do an event like that.”

So the rejection. “It’s really a shame regarding the tournament, it was the last one in the Waldviertel in which the top teams from the Waldviertel took part,” said Grünstäudl. “The other teams are also disappointed.” In addition to Zwettl, the state league competitors from Waidhofen and Schrems had already given their confirmation – Gmünd would also have been there.
