Zurich-Oerlikon: Passers-by face a 2,000-franc fine when entering this housing estate

Passers-by are not welcome in the new housing estate on Eggbühlstrasse in Zurich-Oerlikon. Only tenants and their visitors are allowed to enter the inner courtyard and playground of the apartment block built in 2021. Everyone else faces a hefty fine. «Unauthorized persons are prohibited from entering and driving on the inner courtyard of the property. Anyone who disregards this ban will be fined up to 2,000 francs on request,” says the prohibition board. The sign is signed by the Mayor of Zurich District 11, like the «CH Media»– Newspapers report.

According to Markus Kuhn from the company Intercity, which manages the Eggbühl settlement, the prohibition sign was put up to protect the residents. He cites vandalism or spontaneous, unwanted barbecue parties as examples. How high the number of buses and problem cases is, he leaves unanswered. “As a rule, in individual cases there is a request to leave the private property, which most foreign visitors understand and respect,” Kuhn told “CH Media”.

Brigit Wehrli-Schindler, former director of the “Urban Development Zurich” department, considers the prohibition sign on Eggbühlstrasse to be “an absurd isolated case”. “The fact that a settlement is trying to isolate itself and threatens passers-by with ridiculously high fines is worrying.” She is not aware of a similar case in Zurich.
