At the end of March 2023, all tenants at St.-Johannes-Strasse 23 in Zug were given notice of termination. The owner of the property, the pension fund of the city of Zug, wants to renovate it extensively, like the «Lucerne Newspaper» reported.
The tenants’ association Zug then made the termination public and reported that around 30 residents would be put outside the door. In addition, one finds it incomprehensible that the pension fund, which was restored to health in 2002 by the Zug taxpayers with around 54 million, should resort to such measures.
Tenants’ association had “spread false information”
The Zug pension fund, on the other hand, in which the Mayor Karl Kobelt (62) sits on the board, rejects any guilt. They had “proceeded carefully” and had to renovate the building from 1968.
In addition, the tenants were informed regarding the termination one year in advance and the notice period was reduced to one month. Finally, the pension fund condemned the tenants’ association for having “spread false information” without consultation.
Rent will be higher
According to the pension fund, following the refurbishment all tenants will be offered the opportunity to move back in. Most tenants would appreciate this offer. However, the rent will then be higher. Compared to Zug, however, it will continue to be attractive, the pension fund explains.
In the SP faction of the large municipal council, there are concerns that “a luxury renovation will be carried out under the guise of a necessary renovation” on St.-Johannes-Strasse. As a result, the city of Zug would lose 30 inexpensive apartments.
SP wants to shorten the renovation
Since the city council sits on the board of the pension fund, the SP demands explanations from it. You want to know how long the tenants will have to do without their apartments and whether you will support the tenants.
The SP also wants to know whether measures have been taken or are still being taken to shorten the renovation period. And finally, they are also interested in the percentage by which the rent will increase. (obf)
