Zuckerberg accuses the White House of censoring content about covid-19

The CEO of Meta*, Mark Zuckerberg, accused the Biden Administration of having pressured his company to “censor” content about the covid-19 pandemic.

This was stated by the American billionaire to the Judiciary Committee of the United States House of Representatives, in a letter dated August 26.

In this letter, Sputnik reported, Mark Zuckerberg regretted not having spoken before about this pressure that the company Meta* – which operates the social networks Instagram*, Facebook* and WhatsApp* – received to restrict content that suggested the non-existence of covid-19 or that minimized or nullified the positive effect of vaccines.

Despite this revelation, Zuckerberg commented that he prefers to remain “neutral” at this time of electoral campaigns in the United States, with Donald Trump as the presidential candidate of the Republican Party and Kamala Harris with the Democratic Party.

“I believe that the pressure from the [Biden] Government was wrong and I regret not having been more frank about it,” reads the letter, published on platform X by the Committee.

“I firmly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in any direction, and we are ready to fight back if something like this happens again,” he adds.

Direct criticism of Democrats

Some American media have interpreted the technology businessman’s comments as a direct criticism of the Democrats a few months before the presidential elections in the United States take place. However, Zuckerberg has said that he has no underlying political intentions.

For its part, the White House defended itself against the accusations and limited itself to saying that, “in the face of a deadly pandemic, this Administration [Biden] encouraged responsible actions to protect public health and safety,” according to a statement from the Executive.

“Our position has been clear and consistent: we believe that technology companies and other private actors must take into account the effects their actions have on the American people, while making independent decisions about the information they present,” the statement said.
