Zoo Intrusion in Lille: Theft of Protected Species Triggers Investigation

2023-06-25 14:07:35

The city of Lille announced it on its social networks this Sunday: the zoo was closed for part of the morning due to an intrusion that took place the previous night. “It will reopen at noon, the time to make the necessary checks to guarantee the safety of the public and the animals”, it was specified. The site was finally able to reopen a little before 11 a.m.

As soon as the intrusion was detected, the city triggered its security protocol, which consists of carrying out an in-depth visit to the premises. It was during this inspection by zoo officials that the theft of four Greek tortoises, an animal that can weigh up to 4 kilos, was found.

The town hall of Lille has indicated that it will file a complaint for theft of protected species, in addition to the intrusion. It is not yet known how many people are involved: an investigation has been opened by the national police. “Municipal police patrols around the zoo will be intensified”, adds the city.
