The expectation invaded during this week several of the towns of the Central Mountain of Leon since the news began to spread that the athlete Jesús Calleja was in the area to film an episode of his television program ‘Volando voy’, with which It aims to highlight the rural exodus produced following the closure of the mining industry and to publicize the Zona Alfa León project, detailed here on the day of its official presentation.
During several days, the Zanscar Producciones team toured places like Santa Lucía de Gordón, where they visited the old mining facilities of the Hullera Vasco Leonesa, or La Robla, where two of the protagonists of the episode who can be seen in Cuatro participated in an emotional sports competition.
However, the big day of the filming took place this Saturday, when a thousand people, despite only being expected to attend 600, gathered in the municipal pavilion of La Pola de Gordón to participate in the viewing of some of the best scenes of the chapter.
“Nervous to be on earth with my countrymen.” This is how Jesús Calleja claimed to be minutes before starting today’s recording, which culminates “a week that has been a real blast”. With his family present in the audience, the athlete recalled that he spent part of his adolescence in the Alto Bernesga area, “one of the areas with the most atmosphere in the province.”
The objective of the filming, as Calleja told the public, is “to complete a project that began three years ago” and whose central axis is mountain biking, which he referred to as his “star sport.” The project, devised by the adventurer and communicator, is Zona Alfa León and launches a large mountain bike park, MTB, in the municipalities of La Pola de Gordón and La Robla, in which the Junta de Castilla y León has invested almost a million and a half euros.
Zona Alfa León is approximately 120 kilometers long and has a cumulative drop of close to 10,000 meters. It offers 19 routes, 15 downhill and four circular, for all kinds of mountain bikers, including those who want to spend a day pedaling with the family; from the recreational ones to the most sporty or lovers of the most extreme ‘mountain bike’.
However, ‘Volando voy’ also wants to highlight the situation of the Central Leonese Mountains following the closure of the mining activity five years ago, which gave rise to what Jesús Calleja defined as “the largest rural exodus ever acquaintance”.
For this, the filming included protagonists whose lives have been marked by the black of coal and who, visibly moved, will narrate their experiences. In addition, the chapter will also show the public “the most surreal scene experienced on television” by Jesús Calleja, but it will not be until its broadcast when viewers will be able to know what it is regarding.
