Imagine zombies and other strange creatures wiggling to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. This is a scene that might occur on Place Sainte-Croix in Bernay on Tuesday October 31, 2023 around 6 p.m., on the occasion of the Samhain festival.
A flashmob following the costume parade
The organizing association, Les Trouble-fêtes, proposed to the Arabesque dance school to design a flashmob which will close the big costume parade in the city center for Halloween. The idea had been discussed for several months already.
“Sandrine Hubert (president of Trouble-fests) fell in love with this music,” declares Virginie Fosset, member of the Arabesque office. But impossible to interpret the original choreography of this title released in 1983 and considered one of the greatest clips of all time. “It would take rehearsals and calling on professionals to achieve this,” points out Virginie Fosset.
A simplified choreography
So, to make this performance as widely accessible as possible, Professor Marion Grandidier simplified it as much as possible and broke down the gestures in a video published on YouTube and social networks.
“There are three parts to learn, the verse, the chorus and the end,” she explains. Move your arms from right to left, slide to the side, snap your fingers, shake your shoulders, spread your legs… All the movements are clearly deciphered.
The goal is for people to be able to be inspired by it, especially people who have never danced, so it shouldn’t be insurmountable.

Share a good time
Located in Bernay, Arabesque, which has nearly 150 members, is a multidisciplinary school, with numerous sections and state-certified teachers (advancement to dance, classical, modern jazz, contemporary, floor bars, hip-hop , yoga, Pilates).
“We have never done a flashmob before,” confides Virginie Fosset, happy to see the association participate in a big event like Halloween.

Students have already indicated that they will participate in this giant choreography. And how many of the public will join them spontaneously?
We have no idea how this is going to happen. But it only takes around ten people to get involved for it to make others want to follow.

Of course, “people must not be afraid to dance in front of everyone”.
It is above all regarding “sharing a good collective moment”. And to give it even more scale, it is advisable to come in costume.
