Do you like decimating hordes of zombies? Burn them, electrocute them, dismember them or disembowel them according to your creativity and your imagination? In this case, Dead Island 2 may very well become your favorite game as its action scenes are exhilarating, bloody and, above all, satisfying.
It was long overdue, this sequel to Dead Island. First announced in 2014, it has spent the following years traveling from hand to hand, from studio to studio. Some had even stopped believing in it. But it is indeed true: it has just landed on our consoles.
Fortunately, our patience is now largely rewarded. You can see that fairly quickly once the game has started Dead Island 2 does not take long to display its colors: red (blood, of course) available in all its possible colors and shades.

A brief preamble shows us that a plane supposed to transport the survivors of a zombie infestation crashes in the heart of Los Angeles. The city, besieged by these bloody creatures, is now barricaded and quarantined. Those who are still confined there see their chances of evacuation diminish hour by hour. And for good reason.
Hollywood sans son glam
Whether it’s Bel Air or Beverly Hills, the affluent neighborhoods of Los Angeles have obviously lived through happier days. Their streets are deserted, filthy and teeming with zombies hungry for human flesh. The once lavish mansions have their balustrades decrepit, their windows barricaded and their walls stained with blood.
In short, the big letters of Hollywood – usually symbols of the great American dream – have lost all their opulence and their rhinestones. Think of post-apocalyptic universes at the The Last of Usbut still bathed in the Californian sun.
The player, assuming the features of one of the six characters available to him, must help a handful of inhabitants – always, at least for the moment, human – through various quests and missions. An influencer in search of clicks, an eccentric old actor thirsty for expensive whiskeys and wines, the pretentious assistant of a Hollywood star… These characters that we meet during our adventures are colorful, but also lightly sprinkled with this dark humor so specific to Dead Island.

And that’s where a lot of the fun comes from. Dead Island 2. Admittedly, the ambitions of the game are as big as they are serious, but they remain playful in their execution. The creators probably have only one mission: to entertain the players with great spurts of hemoglobin. And it is frankly successful.
We take pleasure in building our own arsenal to face legions of the undead, each more brutal than the other. From the traditional wooden board to kitchen knives, including pistols, swords, grenades and clubs, the player can give free rein to his inspiration in his destructive quest.
New technologies
The fans of the first hour will recognize here substantially the same mechanics of the first Dead Island, published in 2012. But as the years have passed, they have been immensely modernized, both in their application and in their rendering. It’s fluid, it’s intuitive. And it is above all highly superior to what the franchise had initially accustomed us to.
We may have only invested regarding ten hours in it, but we already know that Dead Island 2 will continue to keep us taped on our controller for quite a while yet.
Zombies better watch out.
