Indonesian sprinter Lalu Muhammad Zohri won a gold medal in athletics in the men’s 100-meter sprint at the 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG) at the Athletics Field of Surabaya State University (Unesa), Tuesday (2/7).

Zohri finished with a time of 10.19 seconds, faster than Malaysian runner Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi with a time of 10.37 seconds and Indonesian runner Fatah Sidik Jaelani with 10.59 seconds.

“Thank God I made it to the final, especially since I was also feeling a little unwell. So because it was the final, I just forced myself,” said Zohri following the match as reported by Between.

The runner from West Nusa Tenggara assessed that all the runners who took part in the 100-meter race in the AUG 2024 event were great athletes with the toughest competitors being runners from Malaysia.

The runner whose name skyrocketed when he won a gold medal at the 2018 World U-20 Athletics Championships in Finland admitted that AUG 2024 was also a warm-up effort before competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Meanwhile, for the women’s 100 meters, Indonesian runner Tyas Murtiningsih won a silver medal and Dina Aulia won a bronze while the gold medal was won by Thai athlete Supanich Poolkerd with a time of 11.83 seconds.

Indonesian Athletics Team Manager Mustara said the results achieved by the athletes, especially the gold medal winners, were close to each athlete’s personal best target.

“For example, Zohri, his best time was 10.17 seconds and in AUG it was 10.19 which means he is stable in maintaining his performance. Hopefully it will peak at the Paris Olympics,” said Mustara. (Z-6)
