Losing weight is a goal pursued by many people. It is believed that zinc is a nutritional supplement that helps in losing weight and burning body fat. Is this true?

Does zinc help to lose weight?

In a study published in Biological Trace Element Research in 2013, researchers found that obese people had lower zinc levels.

Another study published in the same year in the journal “Advanced Pharmaceutical Bulletin” revealed that obese patients who took zinc supplements at a dose of 30 milligrams per day improved their body mass index and decreased their blood triglycerides.

Obesity patients can obtain zinc naturally, by eating the following foods:

– sea food.

– Nuts.

– Whole grains.

– legumes.

– Dairy products.

– meat.

However, it is not possible for obese patients to lose excess weight by taking zinc supplements only, it is also necessary to reduce daily calories by between 500 and 1000 calories, in addition to regular exercise.

Side effects of zinc supplementation

Obese patients should consult a doctor before taking zinc supplements, because high doses may cause:

Abdominal cramps.

– diarrhoea.

Headache.

Nausea.

– vomiting.

– Anorexia.

Weak immunity.

Reducing the body’s ability to absorb other nutrients.

To avoid these side effects, the daily intake of zinc should be no more than 40 milligrams for adults, as recommended by the National Institutes of Health.
