Zimbabwe has at least 215 confirmed cases of cholera by laboratory tests since the last outbreak emerged on February 12, the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare said on Tuesday evening.
Taking stock of the situation, he indicated that the ten provinces of the country were affected, but that there was no epidemiological link between them.
As of May 9, “766 suspected cholera cases, five laboratory-confirmed deaths, 16 suspected cholera deaths and 215 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported,” the ministry said.
At a press conference following the cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, announced that the government would release funds to strengthen the country’s response to the ‘epidemic.
The government “assures the nation that the cholera risk assessment, which should guide the generalization of oral cholera vaccination, has been completed in all ten provinces of the country,” she said. “Active surveillance of entry and exit points continues as part of a multi-sector approach to the response to the cholera outbreak.”
