Zika Virus Outbreak in Solomon Islands: Latest Updates and Preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games

To Solomon Islandsthe Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) has received notification of six cases of the virus Zika confirmed in the laboratory and detected Honiara by the laboratory of the national reference hospital (NRH) on September 30, 2023.

The six cases were detected in 270 blood samples analyzed using multiplex PCR (Trioplex) implemented as part of strengthening support to laboratories for preparations for the 2023 Pacific Games.

Solomon Islands recorded the first outbreak of zika virus (ZIKV) in 2015, with five PCR-confirmed cases in Honiara and over 300 suspected cases, from February to May 2015. Due to limited laboratory testing in At the time, the extent of the epidemic in other provinces was not fully known.
