Zhihui Hou renews her gold in -49 kg with an Olympic record

China’s Zhihui Hou, champion in Tokyo 2020 with three Olympic records, won gold again in the -49 kg weightlifting category thanks to the total of 206 kilos she lifted yesterday at the South Arena in Paris.

Hou had a best attempt of 89kg in the snatch and 117kg in the clean and jerk, another Olympic record that he signed with his name.

The silver medal went to Romanian Mihaela Cambei, with 205 kilos lifted, and the bronze to Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao, with 200.

India’s Mirabai Chanu, Olympic runner-up at the Tokyo 2020 Games, was one step away from the podium and just one kilo, the best result ever achieved by her country in this sport. She was unable to meet her goal of giving India a fourth medal at Paris 2024, a first in a sport other than shooting.

Dominican Beatriz Pirón, in her fourth Olympic Games, a record for her country that she shares with hurdler Félix Sánchez, finished in seventh place, with a total of 192 kilos.

Japan’s Rira Suzuki, world runner-up, was only eighth.

Venezuelan Katherin Echandia, Pan American runner-up, was ninth with 188 kilograms.

Hours earlier, the first gold medal in the weightlifting programme had also gone to China. Fabin Li also defended his title in the 61 kg category by lifting 310 kilos.

Behind him were Thailand’s Theerapong Silachai, with 303 kilos, and American Hampton Morris, only 20 years old, who with 298 kilos gave his country its first medal in this sport since 1984.—EFE
