Former Chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Asia Pacific, HSBC’s first Chinese “Taipan” Zheng Haiquan passed away at the age of 74. According to reports, it is understood that Zheng Haiquan passed away at the Sanatorium and Hospital last night. Before the handover, Zheng Haiquan had joined the Executive and Legislative Councils.
Zheng Haiquan, known as “Zheng Taipan”, has been reported to have been suffering from cancer for many years. According to online information, Zheng Haiquan was born on July 16, 1948. He suffered from poliomyelitis when he was young and was not good at walking. In the 1970s, he was admitted to the Department of Economics, New Asia College, Chinese University, and then went to New Zealand to obtain a Master of Philosophy from the Department of Economics, University of Auckland.
Zheng Haiquan has made rapid progress since joining the Group Finance Department of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in 1978. In 1995, he became the general manager of HSBC Group and the executive director of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, the first Chinese to hold this position.
Zheng Haiquan was transferred to the vice chairman and chief executive officer of Hang Seng Bank in 1998. In May 2005, he succeeded the retired Elton as chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, becoming the first Chinese “taipan” in the 139-year history of HSBC Group.
Zheng Haiquan is married and his wife is Cao Zhian. In addition to business, Zheng Haiquan is also involved in politics. From 1991 to 1995, he was appointed by the Governor of Hong Kong as a member of the Legislative Council; before the handover, he was appointed as a Hong Kong affairs advisor by the Chinese government from 1994 to 1997; from 1995 to 1997, he was appointed as a member of the Executive Council. In 2005, Zheng Haiquan was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star, and in October 2009, he became the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Chinese University.
