Xinhua News Agency, Xiamen, August 31. On August 31, 2023, the Xiamen Intermediate People’s Court of Fujian Province opened a public trial of the first instance to hear the bribery case of Zhang Bencai, former secretary of the party group and chief prosecutor of the Shanghai People’s Procuratorate.
The People’s Procuratorate of Xiamen City, Fujian Province charged: From 2005 to 2020, the defendant Zhang Bencai used his positions as Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Procuratorate Daily, Director of the Film and Television Center of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, Director of the General Office of the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, Secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the Shanghai People’s Procuratorate, The convenience of the chief prosecutor and other duties provided assistance to relevant units and individuals in matters such as land development, business operation, relocation, job transfer, etc., and illegally received property directly or through others, equivalent to more than 48.32 million yuan. The procuratorate requested that Zhang Bencai be held criminally responsible for accepting bribes.
During the trial, the procuratorate presented relevant evidence, the defendant Zhang Bencai and his defenders cross-examined evidence, the prosecution and the defense fully expressed their opinions under the auspices of the court, and Zhang Bencai made a final statement and pleaded guilty and repented in court. At the end of the trial, the court announced an adjournment for a sentencing date.
More than 30 people from the National People’s Congress, members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, journalists and people from all walks of life attended the trial.
