The dimension of the strategic partnership between ZF and Wolfspeed Inc., the specialists in silicon carbide technology, which was announced at the beginning of the year, is taking shape. Both announced today that they would set up a joint European research and development center for silicon carbide power electronics in the Nuremberg metropolitan region. The planned Wolfspeed silicon carbide chip factory in Ensdorf, Saarland, and the Nuremberg center are to become a cornerstone of a European silicon carbide technology network.

“The research center is of outstanding importance for the energy and mobility transition in the EU and supports the strategic goals of Europe,” says Dr. Holger Klein, CEO of ZF. “In addition, the optimization of silicon carbide technology drives industrial change and strengthens the independence of European supply chains.” The cooperation aims to develop innovations for silicon carbide systems, products and applications that cover the entire value chain from the module to the complete system cover and thus shorten the time to market.

The research center will address the requirements in all mobility segments – including passenger, commercial, agricultural and industrial vehicles – as well as the industrial and renewable energy markets. The aim of the cooperation is to achieve improvements such as higher efficiency, higher power density and higher performance of electrification solutions. Wolfspeed’s silicon carbide know-how and ZF’s access to all mobility segments enable a quick and seamless transition to new technologies.

Construction of the center will begin once approval has been received from the European Commission under the EU’s Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCIE) program for both projects, which is expected later this year. The project is supported by the German federal government and the Bavarian state government.

ZF and Wolfspeed are working with other leading organizations from science and industry to establish a comprehensive European silicon carbide technology network. For this purpose, ZF will use its membership in the European Center of Power Electronics (ECPE) and exchange important research results at European level. Over time, the research center will develop into an electronics and semiconductor campus. (awm)
