Zero Hunger is a great opportunity for comprehensive health intervention, says Minister

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Health Minister María Teresa Barán stressed that the “Zero Hunger” program is a great opportunity for the health portfolio to intervene in seven fundamental pillars that range from learning healthy habits, nutritional plans and ophthalmological care.

Barán pointed out that, starting with school meals, work will be done on those issues that go unnoticed among children, such as eye and hearing care, and proper dental care.

Some 125,000 tooth brushing kits will be distributed and proper tooth brushing will be instilled after each meal, as well as proper hand washing before eating, he said in an interview with Paraguay TV.

“We are going to have a generation of children with healthy habits,” said the minister about the program that began on Monday 5 in 2,627 schools, bringing food service to nearly 450,000 students.

Other initiatives carried out in parallel with “Zero Hunger” will include deworming campaigns and ensuring that schools have access to a drinking water connection. The minister reported that prior to the launch of the program, 432 schools with water connection problems were detected and solutions were provided to some 133 in less than a month.

In addition to the works for access to water, it will be ensured that schools have adequate infrastructure in the cafeterias to provide food service.
