2024-02-10 08:00:00

After “Zero constraints to lose weight”, Jimmy Mohamed, media doctor (on France 5 and RTL), does it once more with simple tips to stay in good health, sometimes once morest preconceived ideas.

Good sleep, a balanced diet, a little daily physical exercise. This cocktail, to live as long as possible in good health, Dr Jimmy Mohamed breaks it down into a variety of advice and tips to adopt throughout life, and as early as possible.

“There is no age to start!”, insists the co-host of “Health Magazine”, on France 5, in the subtitle “Zero constraints to stay young”.

You say sleeping in is only for kids. For what ?

Sleep is not a credit card. From the moment we have a sleep debt, even if we try to pay it off, we will always have interest, agios. Sleep that is lost during the week will never be made up on the weekend.

Our brain, in fact, loves doing the same thing, at the same time, from Monday to Sunday. We must try to be as regular as possible because our rhythms of life are synchronized according to sunlight. We’re hungry at the same time, we go to the bathroom at the same time… Sleeping and getting up are the same thing. You should therefore try to sleep better during the week.

On the other hand, you are in favor of micro-naps, that may seem contradictory? No, because this nap is a eureka nap, ten minutes, following lunch to start the followingnoon. This break allows you to have a clearer mind and regain some energy. Between the time we are awake and the time we are regarding to fall asleep, there is something that happens that stimulates creativity. And which allows, upon waking up, to find answers more quickly, solutions to the questions we ask ourselves, as Inserm researchers have demonstrated.

Concerning back pain, a pain of the century, we must limit the x-rays, you say. It’s amazing.

Obviously there are red flags. When you have a history of breast cancer and you have back pain, an x-ray is necessary to ensure that there is no metastasis. If you are 30 years old and have back pain that wakes you up at night, we will make sure that you do not suffer from an inflammatory rheumatological disease.

On the other hand, for the vast majority of patients I see, back problems do not require any examination. Because no MRI is normal. From the age of 30, we will inevitably see things: a small hernia, a small pinch, a little osteoarthritis and which do not necessarily have anything to do with pain.

We then enter a negative spiral which leads to moving less, for fear of having pain, and as we move less, the pain increases. The vicious circle sets in. Especially since most back problems occur alone. And they improve with physical activity, by improving their postures, by taking care of their sleep.

With Covid and winter viruses, we have learned to ventilate living spaces. You go further: air currents, you say, are good for your health.

We are often afraid of catching a cold. The mistake is to ventilate a room following a meeting. Because if we ventilate it before, and even during, the fact of having renewed the air allows pollutants and dust, a source of endocrine disruptors, to be evacuated. As the room is better ventilated, we limit, when we are there, the risk of transmitting respiratory infections: bronchiolitis, flu or even Covid.

To keep your mouth healthy, you recommend a siwak stick. What is it regarding ?

It is a small stick from a shrub that has been used for hundreds of years in Asia and the Middle East. You fray the end and use it like a toothbrush, you can even chew it if you want. This stick contains anti-inflammatory, fluorinated substances, and even silica, which is particularly effective once morest dental plaque and the prevention of inflammation of the gums.

There is no good physical health without good oral health. At lunchtime, when you don’t have time, or when you’re on the move, you can use this little stick that you find in certain pharmacies and para-pharmacies, in herbalists and organic stores.

What your hands say regarding your health

You also recommend purchasing a blood pressure monitor at home. It is vital ?

It is the most common chronic disease in France and does not cause any symptoms except on the day when complications appear. The idea is to detect it. Tension increases the risk of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure. And there is also a proven link with Alzheimer’s disease: the area responsible for memory, the hippocampus, may be less well vascularized.

Blood pressure, when balanced between the ages of 60 and 65, is 20% to 25% less likely to trigger this disease. There is no drug that works as well.

You devote a chapter to the power of smells on health. How it works ?

This is the famous “Madeleine de Proust”. Certain smells take us back to childhood memories. We realized that the areas of the brain responsible for olfaction are very close to those which process memory. Personally, I spent a lot of time at the dentist as a child. As soon as I set foot in a cabinet, the smell takes me back to this unpleasant memory.
But we can use this memory in a positive way by smelling a dish, a perfume, to relax, and also by inhaling essential oils including clementine, which soothes children at bedtime and reduces their nightmares.

Sun cream, even in winter, is it good for business or is it really effective?

I’m convinced. Cosmetic products, such as anti-wrinkle creams, and food supplements are very expensive even though they have not proven their effectiveness. However, we know that the sun is a major factor in skin aging and skin cancer. So, sunscreen, anti-UV day cream, it’s all year round because it’s the best anti-wrinkle cream. It is cheap, effective and helps fight melanoma.
