Pinzgauer Ice Hockey Club replaced Kitzbühel as the front runners with a 5-4 win in a direct duel. Red Bull Juniors are now just playing second fiddle.
The changing of the guard has already become apparent in recent years; in the current season of the Alps Hockey League, the roles in Salzburg ice hockey have finally been reversed. While Zell am See took over the top of the table on Tuesday with a 5:4 away win against leaders Kitzbühel, the Red Bull Juniors left the ice as losers for the fifth game in a row in the 0:3 home defeat against Sisak and are only in tenth place AHL.
The derby three weeks ago was a key game for both Salzburg teams. The Eisbären have been unbeaten since their 3-0 home win over the Juniors. “We didn’t start the season that well,” remembers Eisbären managing director Patrick Schwarz. “We lost all of our first three away games, but then we got things going despite the many team failures.” The new head coach Marcel Rodman was particularly important. “He played a big part in the success. He manages to really weld our mix of talents and veterans together,” says Schwarz.
Despite the current high, the Zellers’ goals for the season have remained the same. “We want to become Austrian champions again, qualify directly for the play-offs and get through to the next round. That certainly won’t be easy, but we still have room for improvement in the team,” explains Schwarz.
Since the derby defeat, the Red Bull Juniors have only scored points with an overtime win against Bregenzerwald. Captain Lukas Hörl is optimistic despite the recent series of defeats and assures: “We are starting a comeback.”
