HIROSHIMA, Japan (AP) — Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will join the leaders of the world’s most powerful democracies in Hiroshima, Japan, on his longest trip since the start of the war that has devastated his country, while G7 leaders prepare to introduce new sanctions once morest Russia for its invasion.
Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, confirmed on national television that Zelenskyy will attend the summit.
“We were sure that our president would be where Ukraine needed him, anywhere in the world, to solve the question of stability of our country,” Danilov said. “Important issues will be decided there, so physical presence is crucial to defend Our interests”.
Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he invited the Ukrainian leader to the summit during his visit to kyiv in March.
Zelenskyy is also scheduled to take part virtually in a meeting the Group of Seven leaders will hold on Friday, where they will receive an update on the situation on the battlefield and agree to redouble their efforts to limit Moscow’s war efforts.
