Zelenskyy fires the head of Ukraine’s air force

In a video speech on Friday evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi says that he has decided to replace the commander-in-chief of the country’s air force, General Mykola Oleschuk, in order to “strengthen Ukraine’s military leadership”.

– We need to protect the people, protect the personnel and take care of all our soldiers, Zelenskyj said. The statement came right after the announcement of the resignation was posted on the website of the presidential office.

The Ukrainian General Staff states that Lieutenant General Anatoly Kryvonozhka has temporarily taken over as Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force.

The F-16 plane crashed on Monday, and the pilot lost his life. According to the Ukrainian military, the control tower lost communication with the fighter plane while it was participating in an operation to ward off a major Russian attack that was targeting several cities in the country.

The cause of the crash is currently not known, but American experts are assisting the Ukrainians in investigating the crash.

An unnamed US official told the Reuters news agency on Thursday that the accident was probably due to pilot error and did not occur as a result of the Russian attack.
