A year following the start of the defensive struggle once morest the Russian invaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired a top commander in Donbass, Eduard Moskalyov. This emerges from a decree published by the Ukrainian Presidential Chancellery on Sunday evening. The decree gave no justification for the move.

Zelenskyy only mentioned Moskalyov in his daily video address on Friday, when he listed the commanders with whom he had spoken regarding the military situation. Moskalyov took command of the combined forces in March 2022, a few days following the start of the Russian war of aggression.

The Russian military is currently concentrating its attacks on the front in the eastern Ukrainian regions of Luhansk and Donetsk. The focus is on the strategically important city of Bachmut, which has been fought over for weeks with both sides suffering heavy losses. Only on Saturday did the Russian mercenary group Wagner announce the capture of a suburb of Bakhmut, which is regarding two kilometers from the city center. Zelenskyj has been showing for weeks that he is dissatisfied with the situation at the front. He has repeatedly described the situation as difficult and painful.
