According to the head of state, he said this during a meeting with Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with officers who are undergoing professional military education courses according to NATO standards, writes European Pravda.
The President spoke regarding the temporary perspective of Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance.
“In my personal opinion, we will be in NATO only when we win. I don’t think that during the war we will be accepted into NATO. This is a risk for some NATO members, while others are simply skeptic regarding this,” – the head of state said in a video distributed on his Telegram channel.
“The question of NATO, as the Secretary General (Stoltenberg – Ed.) correctly said, is a question of the majority. And the majority is a political question. And in order for Ukraine to be politically accepted into the Alliance, this requires victory,” Zelensky added.
When it comes to Ukraine’s membership in the Alliance, “nobody will raise the issue of compatibility with NATO and the level of the Ukrainian military,” Zelensky believes.
The President believes that one of the reasons for today’s war is that Ukraine was not in the Alliance before.
“Many years ago there was also corresponding skepticism from some members, and Russia worked very hard with our current partners, they had a dialogue. She did everything so that Ukraine would not be taken not only into NATO, but also so that Ukraine would not be accepted into the European Union, so that Ukraine would simply did not develop, and that it was not cut off from the influence of the Russian Federation,” the president noted.
The day before, during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that he might not predict exactly when Ukraine would become a NATO member.
In his speech, Stoltenberg also expressed respect for the Ukrainian military who are holding back Russian aggression.
Before that, Stoltenberg met with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Among other things, they talked regarding a 100 billion NATO special fund to support Ukraine.
