Zelensky: Russian troops withdraw while burying landmines

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russian troops of evacuating the country and laying landmines in a ‘catastrophic situation’.

According to the Associated Press on the 2nd (local time), President Zelensky said on Instagram, “The withdrawal of Russian troops is turning Ukraine into a minefield.”

“Even following the withdrawal of Russian troops, there are many dangers that can continue,” Zelensky said.

“They planted landmines near the house and even put detonators on their bodies,” he said.

President Zelensky has advised Ukrainians who want to return home should wait until the explosives are removed.

Ukrainian forces are said to have continued to advance following the withdrawal of Russian troops from near the capital Kiiu.

The British Ministry of Defense said, “It is understood that as the Russian troops withdrew from nearby Kiiu, they also withdrew their troops from Hostomel Airport, a suburb of Kiiu.”

The British Ministry of Defense also said that Ukrainian forces had seized the main road in the second city of Kharkiv following fighting in the east.
