Zelensky: Russia is not ready for a “fair peace”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Russia is now “not ready for peace” and that this is demonstrated by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s suggestion that Ukraine must leave territories illegally occupied by Russian forces in order to enter into negotiations.

“They are not ready for a fair peace,” Zelensky said at a press conference to close the Ukraine Peace Summit in Bürgenstock, Switzerland. “We must do our job, let’s not think about Russia, let’s do what we have to do. At the moment, Russia and its leaders are not ready for a fair peace. That’s a fact,” he said.

Putin, he added, has made several “historical mistakes” since he began his aggression against Ukraine and that this proposal is one more of them. Russia can negotiate peace “tomorrow if it withdraws from our territory,” insisted Zelensky, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared himself open to dialogue.

He also said that Putin was wrong to try to sabotage the summit by persuading countries that are more or less close to him not to attend. In particular, he was asked about China, a country that he did not consider to be an “enemy” of Ukraine. China is an ally of Russia and has been accused of contributing to Moscow’s war effort by supplying components. Beijing decided not to participate in this weekend’s peace summit because Russia would not be absent. “China could help us,” stressed Zelensky.

Even though the United States has resumed sending aid, which had been blocked for months, and announced new shipments yesterday, and other Western allies have pledged to strengthen their cooperation, Volodymyr Zelensky believes that the current volume of aid provided will not be enough to win the war. “There is help. There are important packages. Is that enough to win? No. Is it too late? Yes,” said Zelensky.
