Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited President Joe Biden to Ukraine.
Citing a senior Ukrainian official, CNN reported on the 13th (local time) that President Zelensky requested additional military and financial assistance from the United States and asked Biden to visit Ukraine as soon as possible. However, the media added that the likelihood of President Biden’s visit to Ukraine was extremely low.
The official said Zelensky had presented specific measures to reduce the Russian threat to Ukraine in a phone call with Biden and also mentioned the need for significant financial measures for Ukraine.
“Strong economic support for Ukraine will show Putin that the West is on Ukraine’s side,” a Ukrainian official said.
“The United States, together with its allies and partners, will respond quickly and decisively to further Russian provocations once morest Ukraine,” CNN reported.
The two leaders also agreed on the importance of continuing to pursue diplomacy and deterrence in response to the buildup of Russian military forces on Ukraine’s borders, CNN said.
“Security assistance to Ukraine continues,” a White House official said.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden made it clear in a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the 12th that he would impose swift and severe penalties if Russia invaded Ukraine.
Looking at the White House announcement alone, it seems that the two leaders only reconfirmed their existing positions in this call and did not make any major breakthroughs.
