Zelensky does not consider China’s proposals for a settlement in Ukraine as a peace plan

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky believes that the plan proposed by China for the peaceful settlement of the military conflict in Ukraine is not a plan of specific actions, but reflections on this matter. At the same time, he noted that some points are similar to his plan for a peaceful settlement: he suggested working on them further.

“It seems to me that this was not a Chinese peace plan, not a resolution and not a declaration. It’s not infrastructure for something. It seems to me that China has shown its thoughts on this matter,” Mr. Zelensky said at a press conference (quoted by RIA Novosti). He also called the very fact that China is discussing the conflict between Russia and Ukraine a positive change.

China’s settlement plan has been criticized by the head of Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, Mikhail Podolyak. He pointed out that China’s demand for a “cease-fire” suggests a new line of dividing the borders. Mikhail Podolyak said that Ukraine insists on the withdrawal of Russian troops to the 1991 borders.

China announced its 12-point peace plan today, February 24. The plan outlines the following points: a ceasefire, start peace talks, end unilateral restrictions, and ensure the stability of global supply chains.

The US State Department was skeptical regarding China’s plan. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance does not trust China. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised to study the proposed document, given China’s relations with Russia.
