PRESIDENT Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed in a late-night speech on Saturday that Ukraine’s military is now pushing the war into the aggressor’s territory. Attacks on the border region are continuing.
Moscow’s forces are entering a sixth day of fierce fighting against Kyiv’s biggest incursion into Russian territory since the start of the war. More than 76,000 people have been evacuated from the region.
In a sign of the gravity of the situation, Russia imposed a blanket security regime in three border regions on Saturday (10/8). Belarus, a staunch ally of Moscow, sent more troops to its border with Ukraine.
Zelensky thanked Ukrainian fighters and discussed the ongoing operation in Russia with the country’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
“Today, I received several reports from Supreme Commander Syrskyi regarding the front lines and our actions to push the war into the aggressor’s territory,” Zelensky was quoted as saying by the Telegraph.
“Ukraine proved that it can indeed uphold justice and ensure the necessary pressure on the aggressor.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin called the Ukrainian attack — which military analysts say caught the Kremlin by surprise — a major provocation. (Z-2)
