Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj announced a new security architecture for his country before his visit to Germany and France this Friday. New agreements would be concluded with the partners to make Ukraine strong in the long term. “Ukraine has never had anything like this, although it has always been needed,” Zelensky said in his evening video message on Thursday, which he recorded this time in a train compartment.

Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz will receive Zelenskyj in Berlin this Friday. Germany and Ukraine are expected to conclude a bilateral security agreement. Zelensky is also expected in Paris in the evening, where he also wants to reach such an agreement with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron. The agreements are intended to bridge the time until Ukraine becomes a member of NATO. There is currently no sign of joining the military alliance for the country attacked by Russia. Great Britain had already concluded a first bilateral security agreement with Ukraine.

“Soon we will further strengthen our defense once morest Russian terror,” Zelensky said following recent rocket attacks repelled by Ukrainian air forces. The Ukrainian president is also expected at the Munich Security Conference this Saturday, where he will once once more seek arms and ammunition supplies as well as financial support from his Western allies.

According to his video message, Zelensky was also briefed on Thursday by the new commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Olexander Syrsky, and Defense Minister Rustem Umjerov regarding the situation at the front – particularly in the embattled city of Avdiivka and in the east as a whole. Avdiivka might soon come under Russian control. “We are doing the maximum so that our soldiers have sufficient administrative and technological capabilities to save as many Ukrainian lives as possible,” Zelensky said. He did not give any details regarding the situation in Avdiivka.

Ukraine had lost control over parts of its territory in the Russian war of aggression in the east and south of the country that had been going on for almost two years. With the invasion that began on February 24, 2022, Russia wants to completely take over the previously partially occupied regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson. Ukraine is trying to prevent this with Western help.
