Zelensky and Putin react to the Paris proposal for an Olympic Truce – 2024-07-21 14:04:54

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin have expressed reservations regarding a proposed ceasefire in Ukraine during this summer’s Paris Olympics.

The proposal, first floated by French President Emmanuel Macron and later discussed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, aims to halt hostilities during the Olympics.

Zelensky told the online news website Ukrainska Pravda today that the details of the initiative are not clear to him. He pointed to the dangers that Russia might use the truce to then move military equipment closer to Ukraine.

Zelensky asked the question “who will ensure that their forces do not advance towards us during the truce?”

“So I don’t understand the details. So far it sounds like an unsustainable story to me.”

Putin, returning from an official visit to China, admitted that Xi Jinping conveyed the truce proposal to him, but did not go into details.

But he criticized the West for demanding that Russia abide by the Olympic Truce, while barring Russian athletes from the Olympics.

Moscow has previously expressed doubts regarding such an initiative, as Ukraine might take advantage of this Olympic Games period to further equip its armed forces and regroup for war.

After this proposal made by Macron, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there are no specific proposals from Paris on how to proceed.
