Zelensky: 15 dead in Russian shelling of train station

At least 15 people were killed by Russian shelling at a train station in Ukraine on Ukraine’s national holiday, according to Ukrainian sources. President Volodymyr Zelensky reported on Wednesday that around 50 people were injured at the Chaplyne railway station in the Dnipropetrovsk region. According to the first – not yet verified – pictures from the region, a passenger train was hit.

The death toll might rise

“Rescue forces are on duty. Unfortunately, the number of deaths may increase,” Zelensky reported in a video link with the UN Security Council in New York. “This is how we live every day. This is how Russia prepared for this session of the UN Security Council.”

Elsewhere in the Dnipropetrovsk region in the center of the country, an 11-year-old child was killed by Russian shelling on Wednesday, local authorities said. In April, a Russian rocket hit the station forecourt in the city of Kramatorsk in the Donbass, killing 57 people.

Ukraine on Wednesday marked the 31st anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union. The day also marked half a year since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
