Fans of the Zelda franchise know the Cocottes well. The latter are mythical animals from the adventures of Link, and have had a considerable influence on the lore of the games. Notably known for their reprisals if the blond hero attacks one of them, the Cocottes are real stars. Players can also grab them, turning them into a paraglider as they leap into the void. A discipline, called “Cucco Gliding” which has only strengthened users’ love for these little creatures. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, they are even more useful than that!
Cocottes as an ally of choice to avoid pitfalls?
Link’s enemies are many, and are found throughout Hyrule. But the most virulent (apart from Ganondorf) are undoubtedly the Yiga clan. In Tears of the Kingdom, they set traps for the hero using bananas as bait. Although quite obvious, these traps can deceive those motivated by greed, and/or hunger. But as demonstrated by the user FillzExists via Reddit, players can call on Cocottes to avoid these tricky traps. You read correctly.
In the video linked to the Reddit post in question, we see Link wearing a Cocotte, heading near a Yiga trap. The animal suddenly begins to cry out in alarm. A very useful warning to those who have not yet crossed paths with this type of banana trap during their adventure!

These animals with overdeveloped instincts
It’s true, the Cocottes seem to have a very special instinct. We don’t know why chickens would react to Yiga traps, but we suspect that their reputation has a lot to do with it. The developers undoubtedly wanted to give them many uses, as if to pay homage to them. On top of that, the Cocottes seem programmed to react to any nearby enemy. It is therefore possible that they feel the presence of Yiga even before they appear!
Besides their apparent ability to detect hidden Yiga, the Cocotes of Kakariko Village are said to have started laying their eggs in caves, in order to cope with the upheaval of all of Hyrule. Another proof that their instincts are almost overdeveloped. One thing is certain, the Cocotes are allies! Be careful though to the oracle Cocotte, at the southern relay of Akkala, which is in truth a trap of the Yiga clan. Ironic no?
