Zayed Sustainability Prize opens submissions for 2025 cycle

The Zayed Sustainability Prize, the UAE’s groundbreaking global sustainability and humanitarian award, has officially announced that the submission period for the 2025 cycle is now open.

Submissions will be accepted through the Prize’s online portal until June 23, 2024. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), non-profit organizations (NPOs) and high schools with sustainable solutions are invited to apply in one of the six categories Health, Nutrition, Energy, Water, Climate Protection and Global High Schools.

At the start of the 2025 submission cycle, HE Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize and President of COP28, said: “Since 2008, the Zayed Sustainability Prize has honored the legacy of Sheikh Zayed by promoting inclusive sustainable and humanitarian development across the globe world promotes. In this crucial decade of climate change, these values ​​are more important than ever. I am optimistic that the award will contribute to global climate action in line with the UAE consensus, which will pave the way for an effective response to the global stocktaking decision.”

In response to the urgent climate crisis and to further support the UAE’s efforts to accelerate practical solutions needed to advance climate action and help vulnerable communities around the world, the funds were awarded for the price of US$3.6 million -dollars increased to $5.9 million. The prize is worth $1 million for each winner in the categories of health, nutrition, energy, water and climate protection. In the Global High Schools category, which is divided into six world regions, each school can apply for up to $150,000 to start or expand their project. The six world regions in the Global High Schools category are North and South America, Europe and Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and East Asia and the Pacific. The latest winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize were recognized at an awards ceremony during COP28 in the United Arab Emirates.

To encourage a broader range of organizations and high schools to participate, the award will accept entries in multiple languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish and Portuguese. This ensures that innovative solutions with different linguistic and cultural backgrounds can be recognized.

In the categories of health, nutrition, energy, water and climate action, organizations should demonstrate that they are improving access to essential products or services in their target communities and are able to implement a long-term vision for better living and working conditions. In the “Global High Schools” category, projects should be student-led and demonstrate innovative approaches to addressing sustainability issues.

Each submission for the prize is evaluated in a rigorous, three-stage process. First, all submissions undergo due diligence to ensure they meet the prize’s evaluation criteria of impact, innovation and inspiration. In this way, the qualified contributions are identified and the eligible candidates are selected. The evaluation is then carried out by a selection committee made up of category-specific panels of independent international experts. The finalists are selected from this shortlist and are then presented to the awards jury, which unanimously selects the winners in all six categories.

The winners of the Zayed Sustainability Prize will be announced at an awards ceremony during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) 2025.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize pays homage to the legacy of the late founding father of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The purpose of the award is to advance sustainable development and humanitarian action by recognizing and honoring organizations and high schools that provide innovative sustainable solutions in the Health, Food, Energy, Water, Climate Action and Global High Schools categories. Over the past 15 years, the Prize has positively impacted the lives of 384 million people worldwide through its 117 winners.
