Zaventem Airport Residents Victorious: Belgian State Condemned for Improper Runway Use

2023-12-26 11:54:00

A victory for 1,400 residents of Zaventem airport. The Belgian State is condemned for improper use of short runway 01. Local residents will be compensated for the nuisance they suffer during landings.

Planes landing at Brussels airport are of course passengers arriving in Belgium. It is also a nuisance for local residents. 1,400 of them filed a lawsuit. They live in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre, Kraainem, Sterrebeek and Wezembeek-Oppem. And they undergo landings on this runway, the shortest at the Brussels airport, runway 01.

“It is less well equipped. It is not acceptable at the level of a large number of traffic. Here, what the judge said is that we need a stable wind standard which corresponds to international definitions for that we use runway 01 only when it is windy”indicates Philippe Touwaide, air mediator of the federal government.

Track 01 at the heart of the conviction here it is. Last Friday, for the French-speaking court in Brussels, the Belgian state made a mistake. He did not clarify the wind standards. Today, the minister in charge reacts.

“This conviction is above all the confirmation of a legal imbroglio inherited from the past. I have done everything possible since the beginning of the legislature to resolve it”declared Georges Gilkinet, the Federal Minister of Mobility (Ecolo).

“There is no legal imbroglio. There is no contradictory decision, first of all. Second, the minister has known since October 2020 that he had to modify the number of winds, he did not do so. This new conviction shows that he should have moved and acted.”underlines Philippe Touwaide.
