Zattoo wants to be greener.

Zattoo produced some 543 tonnes of CO2 in 2021, according to its latest carbon footprint. The TV streaming specialist is keen to point out that this represents around 20% less during the COVID-19 pandemic compared to 2019. What to make of all this communication?

It did not escape anyone. The various forms of confinement have led to an explosion in the use of streaming services. At the same time, due to the sharp increase in video calls and online telephony, the amount of data passing through the Internet has reached record levels during the pandemic.

The weight of digital bulimia

This digital information bulimia obviously translates into an increase in energy consumption, ie electricity. And depending on where it comes from, it can be the source of part of the CO2 emissions, even if this is only slightly the case in Switzerland, which is also exposed to potential supply problems due to its weak elite. visionary. For its part, Zattoo says in particular to use wind power.

According to calculations by ClimatePartner detailed here, Zattoo’s CO2 emissions amounted to 543 tons in 2021. Before Covid, this figure was still 692 tons of CO2 in 2021. Zattoo therefore managed to save more than 20% of its emissions during the pandemic. This is mainly due to the sharp decrease in business travel, but also to the increase in teleworking.

Strengthen public transport

“Last year, the company also took additional steps to further reduce its CO2 consumption. These include the provision of discounted tickets for public transport, the rental of bicycles for work and green mobile phone contracts for company employees, as well as the planting of its own forest”, according to a communiqué which still evokes many interesting measures.

We can not emphasize this enough. Even if efforts must be made in all areas, the example of Zattoo shows once again that mass individual mobility remains a major problem. For the rest, these figures are obviously to be handled with caution. And even if it is good to plant forests and multiply good deeds, the best thing is to treat the evil at the root by doing everything possible to limit the production of CO2.
